During our field trip from Kigali to Nyamasheke, we collected soil samples every 20km, recording the GPS coordinates at each point. We also installed soil probe columns in both crystalline and basaltic soils to study their characteristics.
In addition, we worked with a family affected by podoconiosis disease, collecting blood samples to investigate whether the cause is linked to soil exposure or genetics.
The trip also included a visit to the Mudende crater in Rubavu district to collect more soil samples, adding a geological perspective to the study.
