During his research stay at ISTerre-Chambery (France), Sylvain is conducting analog experiments to investigate the lateral propagation of magma within the lake Kivu rift zone. Under the supervision of Dr. Virginie Pinel, he performs experiments that reproduce magmatic processes under different buoyancy and extensional stress field conditions. The experimental results are analyzed and interpreted using numerical modeling with COMSOL software aiming to improve our understanding of the physical mechanisms that control magma propagation in rift environments.
