Due to the concentrated explosive methane gases in Lake Kivu, which has earned the nickname of "killer lake," there are multimillion dollar initiatives targeted at harvesting methane gas for various purposes.
The Shema Power Lake Kivu (SPLK), GASMETH, Kibuye Power 1, and KivuWatt Project megaprojects were started by the Rwandan government to extract the gas.
According to estimates, the methane gas in Lake Kivu has the ability to produce 700 MW of power over the course of 55 years. Rwanda intends to utilise the gas for industrial purposes, methane-to-power projects, and other purposes as well, such as making fertilizer.
